She knocked at the door, dressed in her nicest clothing- aside from the fancy dress Dax had put her in the night of the ball. Her hair was tied back in a braid, with loose bits handing on the sides of her face, and her side bang nearly getting in her eyes. Her eyes, usually having a feeling of determination and power, seemed to droop. As if there were nothing left.
After all, she was supposed to be here with her lover. Not alone.
Danielle Otis patiently waited outside of her old home in Littlebay, nervously rubbing at the bottom of her shirt with two fingers. She felt odd to be back- no longer the hustle and bustle of the city, but the plain and simple feeling of the farming community.
It hurt her to be here without Xavier. But she didn't have much of a choice- he was hurt badly. He would not wake for months- or, not wake ever again. But Danielle needed questions answered. Questions that only her mother could give her.
The door swung open, and a tall woman with one eyebrow raised stared down at Dani. Her hair was tied back in a messy bun, and an apron was wrapped around her thin body. Some wrinkles lined her face, and she made a huge grin. Her ears were rather fluffy as they sat atop her head, and a long puffy tail swung back and forth behind her.
"Danielle, my darling!" Dani sighed as her mother pulled her into a hug- she hated to be called Danielle, but her mother insisted. Eleanor Otis was quite the odd woman- the way she usually spoke to her daughter would have anyone think that she hated the poor girl. But both her and Dani knew that she cared. She just usually had a very odd way of saying it.
She pulled back, resting her hands on her daughters shoulders. "I wasn't expecting you! Is everything alright?" Danielle opened her mouth to speak, before sighing.
"Mama, is Papa here? I need to talk to you both."
The three people sat down in the living room- a rather ratty looking place, but seemed to be undergoing work at that moment. A square table sat in the middle, with a few seating areas around. Tea was placed on the table, from which Dani took it upon herself to have some.
As well as Dani and Eleanor, a man sat in the room. He was shorter than Eleanor, even sitting down, and was rather large. His hair was a bit short, coming to about halfway down his forehead. His clothing indicated that he had just been gardening- the clothing fit the description, not to mention dirt covered his arms and lower legs. Last but not least, he was the only human in the room. Frederic Otis- a more simple, quiet man. Most would call him dumb- for the most part, he was just quiet. Especially as they awaited Danielle to speak.
Danielle placed the cup of tea back down on the table after she took a sip, and pulled some hair back out of her face and around her ear. Placing her hands in her lap, she nervously began.
"I'm sorry for just barging in like this, but...I have important news. I'm...I'm expecting."
Her face went rather red, as her parents just stared at her from across the table. Eleanor, though, soon broke out laughing- it was a joke. Frederic on the other hand, he began to go red with his daughter as well. Not out of rage- out of nervousness. He didn't exactly know how to feel about the situation.
"Oh darling, really now. Please don't tell me you came all the way out here for a joke!" her mother continued to laugh, and Dani grew more red. But this time out of annoyance.
"I would not lie to my parents, Mama. Never," she stated boldly. As soon as Danielle began speaking boldly to her mother, it was a sure sign that an argument would soon ensure. Her mother raised an eyebrow, before both furrowed down.
"You...what?! You're expecting?! I never thought you the type to sleep around, Danielle! If it was really that tough to earn money, you could have just came home!"
Danielle's mouth nearly hit the floor as she nearly began yelling right back at her mother.
"I am not sleeping around! I happen to be with this man, thank you very much, and we are very much in love!"
"Oh, please. You've never been interested in boys!"
"Well I AM!"
"Then where by the gods name is this man?!"
Frederic could only slink back in his seat. The poor man was never one for conflict- and Danielle and his wife so very often caused conflict between each other. Really, he didn't want to step in, but he had to.
"Sweetheart...might we let our little girl speak? She's never lied to us before, has she?"
The two woman in the room stopped, and looked at the man. Finally, Eleanor sighed, before laying back in her seat to relax as well.
"Alright, Danielle. Speak."
Dani was still tense, clenching her teeth together, before she finally sighed as well.
"Xavier...my boyfriend. He is not here because he is hurt. He was supposed to come, but he was in an accident. He's in a coma. Might wake up in a few months. Might never wake up."
Eleanor opened her mouth to speak, but Frederic placed his hand on her knee, which shut him up. He wanted Dani not to be interrupted.
"But..that's not why I'm here. I have questions, and I didn't think I could go anywhere else but here to get them answered," Dani finished, laying back in her seat. Glad the hardest part was over.
After a moment's hesitation, Eleanor nodded.
"I'll answer everything that I can, Danielle."
Danielle sighed as she walked through Avaleur. It was the day after meeting up with her parents- a rather stressful time, if she had to say so herself. She asked questions- her mother would answer. She told Danielle things she already basically knew, of course. Regular things about being pregnant. Sickness, cravings, and even that neko people usually had litters.
But Danielle was more cautious than ever after learning a little tidbit of information from her mother- after learning that the father of Dani's children was human, her mother saw fit to warn her. Not all of her children would be neko people. There was a chance of them being all human, or some human. Like any other cross-race child. But that was not what worried Dani.
When a pregnant neko woman would transform, if her children were neko as well they would transform as well. That would make for no problems- they would fit perfectly fine in any form. But if any were human? The child would most likely die. To Danielle's surprise, her mother told her that she was supposed to have three other siblings. All turned out to be human- a horrible accident.
Danielle shivered at the thought as she brushed her hair out of her face, looking at some of the stalls absentmindedly. She wondered what life would have been like with some siblings- probably worse she concluded. They would not be able to survive- they had barely been able to with only three family members. But six? Dani figured she might not be in Avaleur if that was the case.
Those thoughts drifted from her mind as she weaved her way through the crowd, not really paying much attention.
Her thoughts were on two very important things- one, Xavier. Her heart ached for the man. She wanted to know who had done this to her lover- but knew that while she was still pregnant she would dare not ask, in fear of risking the children's lives for her own revenge. She didn't know what to do- all she could do was visit every day, and talk to him in the hopes that he might wake up feeling fine. But as every hour passed she grew more and more upset. Feeling as if he might not wake up.
When he was disappearing, at least she could see him. Talk to him. Do something about it. But now? Now was just a time of waiting. And Danielle couldn't do that well at all.
The second important thing, something that made her as equally upset- the dead of Dax. Her mind drifted to the night they went to the castle- she had a wonderful time, to her surprise. Other then the whole escaping part, and the worrying about going up on stage, and the whole 'I might be having a miscarriage'. She enjoyed getting dressed up. She enjoyed how the room looked. The music, the people. And Dax- he had been kind that night. And Danielle knew that he was definitely one of the few friends she had in Avaleur. One of the good friends.
And then he told her that he loved her. She was still in shock, she didn't know how to handle it. She had been so worried about facing the man again, so worried about how she would act, what she would say. And then he was gone. Dead. And she didn't even get to say goodbye.
The thoughts of Xavier and Dax nearly brought tears to her eyes once more, so she kept her head down as she passed by the crowds.
The fountain came up close, and Danielle sat down by the edge. Some children were playing ball a few feet away, others were chatting at the fountain, or reading. Practicing tiny spells. Danielle looked rather lonely just sitting there by herself, looking over the fountain. One hand supported her behind her, the other lightly touched the tip of the water as she was deep in thought.
Danielle didn't know what to do- she had lost Dax. She risked losing Xavier. And she worried that whatever happened with her stomach that night would happen again- the pain. The scare. What if she lost the children, too?
Dani was more scared right now than she had ever been in her entire life.
