Born far away to both a living mother and father, Nate grew up an only child. He spent his adolescence receiving an education from his mother, who had worked as a caretaker for the royalty in their lands for quite some time. His father was a Knight who he did not often see for the majority of his childhood. As a young child, Nate spent most of his time with friends. At the ripe age of twelve, he began to work in a lumber mill. Because he was still young and rather undeveloped physically, Nate handled the menial tasks of stripping the lumber of it's bark and maintaining the tools that they had used. He also kept the mill clean, or tried to. As he aged further, Nate began to develop into a fine young man with many responsibilities. He had earned a reputation in the village they had lived in after confronting a group of ruffians who had taken up residence in the local inn. Although he had his ass thoroughly handed to him, he managed to stand his own against one of them, and forced them out due to his stubbornness and inability to stay down. After that day, his father had returned home for some months.
Nate began to learn swordsmanship under his father's tutelage and actually quite enjoyed it. He excelled quickly and could match his father in terms of strength in no time due to the time he worked in the mill. After some time, Nate took up hunting with the local guild and learned various skills under them. He already knew how to maintain equipment from working in the mill, and he already had the strength and skill with a sword to outmatch any of the lesser swordsman in the guild. However, from them, he learned how to use a bow to some extent, as well as how to prepare the game he killed. Nate also learned the basics of tracking and stealth, as well as how to ride a horse.
At the age of nineteen, Nate and his mother received word that his father had fallen in battle. Outraged by the news, Nate set out to find the killer of his father. He paid the local guild for a horse using the money he had earned from his time in the mill, packed up his sword and bow, and set out. Years passed and eventually Nate's anger and frustration subsided as he traveled. He slowly began to love the nomadic life and simply traveled the world to fulfill a sense of adventure. After he turned twenty, Nate accidentally joined a band of mercenaries after a night of heavy drinking and poor decisions. He quickly grew to love his brothers in arms and traveled with them for some time, often partaking in less than honourable tasks. Nate had joined under a different given name, however. He used his father's name, "Wolfe", and still used the name occasionally when he'd rather not give his mother's given name. He preferred using his father's given name regardless, as he believed that "Nathaniel Wolfe" had a nice ring to it. Petty thievery was common amongst the guild, though Nate never partook in it. It was mostly harmless misdeeds, such as misconduct in a tavern. After some months, Nate and the band went their separate ways. He eventually found himself in Avaleur and low on coin, eager to see what adventure the city could bring.
