It was a well known fact that Phillis was the most spoiled Von Christ child. It was because, due to his elder brother next in line to become king and his little sister being the only girl, his parents didn’t hold many expectations for the boy. He was a fairly sweet and bearable child, with the occasional spat. It was around when the boy was eleven years old that he got his reputation for being completely foul tempered.
It was supposed to be a completely happy event for the whole kingdom. The king and queen had been waiting delightfully for both their sons to be present to share with them the good news. They were almost positive the boys would share their excitement. After all, they were old enough to handle it. Winston was eighteen and Phillis was eleven, they weren’t children anymore in their parents eyes.
After they had both boys present, it wasn’t long before the good news just came out. The queen smiled at both boys sweetly. “We have something to tell you both, we’ll only take a moment of your time.” She said, just wanting to get right to the point. Winston smiled in return, he hadn’t minded, the boys were just missing a study session, that was all. It was nice to be away from the library from awhile.
The king put his arms around both of the boys. “Well, Cecilia, tell them.” He hurried her, excitedly. The queen smiled. “In a few months you boys will have a little brother or sister!” she exclaimed, clapping her hands together in delight. “Mama, that’s wonderful!” Winston exclaimed, he was also quite excited. Phillis, on the other hand, didn’t react quite the way everyone had expected. “No!” he cried out. Everyone turned to face the boy in surprise. “What’s wrong, lovely?” his mother asked confused.
“You can’t!” the boy cried out, he stood up, crossing his arms. “You’re not allowed to! I don’t want more siblings!” he turned his head away. The queen looked at the king, unsure of what to do. The boy was rather unpredictable, they had to be careful with their choice of words. “But, Phillis..” The king began, but was soon interrupted. “No!” the boy stomped his foot on the ground. “No, no, no! I don’t want it! It’s not fair!” the boy refused to hear anything they had to say. “Phillis, stop it! You’re acting like a baby.” Winston cut in, glaring the boy down. “How do you think I felt when they said you were on the way? I was pretty pissed too.”
“Shut up, Winnie!” Phillis barked back. “I don’t care! I hate you all! None of you listen to me!” he finished, before finally storming out of the room, slamming the door behind him. The sound of a slamming door in the castle was rather frightening. It was almost like a warning to everyone in the castle ‘Hide! The prince is out and about!’
It was an unexpected tantrum, there was no time to hide any of the valuables in the castle before Phillis got to them. He kicked down tables, smashed vases, creating some rather expensive damage. The boy was practically Painestons biggest issue at the time. He soon stumbled into the room of the king and queen. He wasn’t allowed inside of it, for very obvious reasons. But luckily enough for the boy, the doors were unlocked. It was uncharted territory for him. Full of many breakables he had not yet touched.
Phillis pulled the sheets off of the large bed. It took him a moment since it was such a large bed. He threw the books of the bookshelves, knocked over the curtains, pulled the clothing out of the closet. He destroyed everything and anything, to cause the same amount of agony to his parents that they had caused to him.
And then he saw it.
On top of the dresser drawer was a small box. It was made of wood It was very well carved, yet old looking. A beautiful design was engraved on the top. Phillis immediately wanted to get his hands on it but the top of the dressers was much too high for him. He looked around and got an idea. He took all the books and boxes he had knocked over, piling them high beside the dresser. He carefully climbed on top of them, he was now tall enough to grab the pretty treasure box. He took it into his hands and then jumped down onto the ground.
Once Phillis had it in his hands, he realized how precious and beautiful it truly was. He handled it carefully. It seemed like it was a very important item, maybe he wouldn’t break it after all. He opened the top. It was full of his mother necklaces and earrings and had a mirror in the top. He looked at himself for a moment, that was when he realized he shouldn’t have caused so much damage to the castle. But it was too late now, what was done was done.
Suddenly the door flung open, the king and queen stormed in. “What in gods name have you done?!” boomed his fathers loud voice, startling Phillis and causing him to drop the treasure box. The jewelery went flying all around the room and the mirror smashed immediately. The queen gasped in horror. “Phillis, how could you?!” she cried. It was the first time she’d really addressed him by his first name instead of ‘lovely.’
Before Phillis could justify his actions, the king stormed towards him, striking him across the cheek with his large, bare hand. “This is the last straw! You are the absolute WORST child I’ve ever had the misfortune of meeting!” he yelled, rather harshly. The boys eyes watered as he looked down, he’d never really been struck or yelled at like this before. The king wasn’t finished. “You have no mercy when it comes to your tantrums! Your mother and I are tired of it, you are to clean up this mess and then we will decide your punishment!”
Phillis remained quiet, he wasn’t sure how to respond. He held back his tears. The king grabbed the boy by the shoulder, he was furious. “DO YOU HEAR ME?!” he bellowed into his face. Phillis sobbed openly, tears running down his face. “I-I-I’m sorry, Daddy!” he yelled back, crying loudly. “I don’t want to hear that until you’ve finished with this mess!” He let go of the boy. He grabbed the queens hand as he stormed out of the room, leaving the boy sobbing by himself.

Many hours had passed since the incident and the queen worried about Phillis. The boy had finished cleaning hours ago but hadn’t left his room since. She asked around but nobody had seen him. They had all been avoiding running into the temper-mental prince. She sighed, there was nothing she could do at that point in time except wait. She was sewing, fixing a dress of hers that had gotten ripped in the incident. She decided not to think too heavily about the boy, he’d show up eventually. She continued about her business.
The queen was soon interrupted by a small, very sorry-sounding voice. “Uh..mommy?” The queen turned around to see none other then Phillis. She set her dress and sewing kit beside her. “Oh, lovely, where have you-“ she began to ask but was interrupted by the boy shoving her broken treasure box into her face. “I’m really, really sorry. Please don’t hate me, mommy.”
The queen looked at the treasure box in confusion, she took it hesitantly. “Why did you bring this to me?” she asked, she had tried to forget about the unfortunate event. “Open it.” Phillis said eagerly as he hid his hands behind his back. The queen, with much questioning, opened the small box. Most of her jewelery (okay, less then half) had been retrieved and the mirror, which had smashed, was now glued back together. Although it wasn’t perfectly matched together, most of the large pieces were placed together. It wasn’t perfect, but it was evident that much effort had been put into it.
The queen smiled to herself, before turning to Phillis. “Thank-you, lovely.” She said, hugging the boy. He hugged her back tightly. She took notice of his little bandaged fingers. She took both his hands, kissing the fingers one by one. Phillis smiled cutely. “Do you forgive me?” he asked finally. “Of course, I do. And do you forgive me?” she asked in return. Phillis nodded his head. “Yes, and I promise to not hate my little sibling even if they are really annoying.” he promised, putting his pinky out. The queen wrapped her pinky around his gently as she laughed to herself.
It was well known that Phillis was the most spoiled Von Christ child. But he wasn’t all bad, he just needed to learn a few lessons first.
