Welcome to Avaleur, a medieval fantasy roleplay site where anything is a possibility. Face bandits, or knights. Work your way up to become part of Avaleur's castle, or try your luck at being a thief. Own a shop, be a guild master, start a family. The possibilities are endless.
Maureth kept his eyes shut tight, using his unbelievable hearing, smell, and touch senses to scout out for his target. He had arrived in Avaleur silently, slipping past the guards in the night. He had slept in a tree above the practice fields, and now that it was daylight he intended to train a bit. His mind locked on to the wooden dummy in front of him, and he tightened his grip on the two spiked cestus's on his hands. (a cestus is like brass knuckles, except that it is one piece of bronze wrapped around your fingers. No finger holes, one big hole. It was commonly used in Roman gladitorial games by the faster, more daring gladiators.)
He lept at the dummy, covering ten feet in about a second, and landed a flurry of vicious blows on the dummy, hitting it on its head down to the place where it cut off at the waist. Straw and wood shards were blown off of it, and then Maureth kicked the pole holding it up. It shattered, and he threw an uppercut into the dummy, sending it ten feet into the air. Maureth spun and kicked the dummy as it sank to the ground, sending it flying twenty yards or so. The whole thing took ten seconds. He kept his foot raised, then exhaled slowly and let his foot down, keeping a guarded stance.
Xavier had been a regular at the practice fields. Practicing mornings here and nights at the arena to master his blade techniques. This morning was the same as most, he was tired and no one was there. That's why he liked the morning sessions a bit better.
He walked over to a small fountain in the practice fields and splashed the cold water onto his face. It had the desired effect. He was much more awake now and ready to get started. He first went to the archery range, he however pulled out a set of knives and used thoughts rather than arrows and a bow.
After a while, just after sunrise, he heard the sounds of a smashed dummy skid across the ground. Someone else was here? That was odd. He decided to check it out. It didn't take him long to see the man, he hadn't seen him around, and he didn't look like a guard, but the fields were public. Xavier looked at the destroyed dummy, he should have went with the sturdier ones.
Maureth noticed the man immediately. He was quite loud, but he still said nothing. In one fluid motion, he stepped to his left then launched himself into the air into a barrel roll that ended with a heel drop on another dummy. It shattered into pieces, and Maureth smiled a bit to himself. He landed on his toes, then did a backflip onto the post that held the dummy up. He stood on it with both feet, on his toes. Then he went through the motions of a balance exercise, throwing himself around gently while staying on the pole.
Then he did something he hadn't done in about three months. He opened his eyes to the world. They were as black as the abyss, and as soon as he opened them his power was unleashed in full. He quickly covered his left one up with his headband, then focused on controling his right eye's power. After a few seconds, he got it under control and the red aura that had surrounded him ebbed away slowly.
"Times two..." He whispered to himself, then he pushed on the pole and it splintered underneath his feet. With a laugh, he lept away as it shattered, doing a spin in midair and doing another heeldrop on a third dummy. It landed on the shoulder, blowing the right half of its body away. Maureth landed on his feet lightly, then turned and jabbed the dummy in the area the heart would be on a human body. He easily passed through it, then he saw the man watching him from a distance. He withdrew his fist, then waved at the man.
Xavier had been watching, the man was pretty good. It was obvious he had some help though. Whatever power came with his eyes made him excel further than human. He wasn't sure exactly how to respond but waved back no the less. It was just a bit awkward is all. He felt he would at least engage in a small greeting to make it less awkward. "You have exceptional form," Xavier complimented as he picked up a small piece of the dummy that had flown towards his feet.
Maureth laughed ath the man. He had obviously thought this was awkward. "Thank you my unknown observer. I try to master it more and more every day." With that, he picked up a shard of the dummy and squeezed it between his index finger and thumb, shattering it. "Any idea where I can train without shattering everything in one hit?" He asked leisurely.
"You could stop using the children's dummies," he suggested a little chuckle in his voice. He had been on the small, 'kitty pool', section of the grounds where young pages and students learned the very basics with wooden weapons.
Xavier motioned to a larger area filled with obsticals and things of the like. It was were the Crux and Roland's select few trained. "That is the best we have got, can take a slice from a claymore so I think it will work better for you."
"A claymore? I remember fighting against somebody with one of those. He was slow, and now he's dead." He said. He was interested to know who trained here. "Here is where the good ones train huh? I wanna fight them!" He declared. Then he sprinted over, getting there in a few seconds, and slammed a knee in the gut of one of the dummys. A groaning sound echoed throughout the training field, and Maureth smiled as the dummy held. Then he unleashed a furious flurry of blows, and after about ten seconds the dummy was dented and had its innards sprouting out from multiple holes in the dummy. A few seconds of combat like that and it would fall apart at the seams. They were well built, he gave the makers that, but steel dummys for hand to hand experts work much better.
Xavier took note of the seemingly chaotic style that the man used. "Yes, they can be slow that is true." he said not really sure what else to say about it.
He, being left after the man sprinted off, arrived in the area. Xavier looked at the damaged dummy and he saw Maureth study it, "Do not worry, they break all the time. They get replaced often so don't feel like you must hold back."
Maureth grinned at this, then turned on a dummy. With a long sigh, he let his inner guards down, and a flood of energy erupted from his body. The force of it knocked the nearly broken dummy off of the pole. With a fluid movement, Maureth spun and chopped the head off of a second dummy, then lept into the air using the momentum from the spin to launch himself into the air. He span faster and faster until he created a small tornado, just large enough you could see it, and brought his full force down onto the earth. The remaining dummy's blew apart and up from the impact, and the earth formed a crater ten yards across with chunks of rock flying off in every direction.
"Whoops, think I overdid it..." He said, slightly remorsful.
Xavier enjoyed studying the mans style and skill. It was quite exceptional. "I wouldn't say so, the Crux do similar things. The breaking dummies part that is." he said with a chuckle.
Xavier laughed, it wasn't the man's fault he didn't know what a Crux was. But to here him ask if he was one made him laugh, "No, I am sorry to disappoint. I am not a Crux, but I suppose I could soar with you if you wish it."
Maureth smiled a little, barely noticable. "It you will. Then take the first blow." He said, lowering his body to the ground with his arms in front of him and his legs spread apart to give him the best balance he could have. It was a purely defensive stance, good for countering as well.
Xavier nodded, removing his heavy cloak and setting it to the side. His outfit was the same, just without the lose bits. He still wore the 'loin cloth'.
Maureth had taken a defensive stance, a very good one at that. Xavier began to let the area produce a large amount of fog and soon the area would be thick with it. "What are we using for this spar? Fists? Weapons? You may make the rules."
The man had taken off his loose clothes, in order to speed up Maureth guessed. His sword was dull on the edge, more of a club than it should be. He had scars, and his hands look as if they had once had gauntlets with weapons on them at one point. The fog would have been a good idea, but Maureth's eyes don't need to see. They can detect where his enemy is just by sensing the aura that every person puts off. His was particularly strong, a good sparring partner. Maureth would try not to kill him, so he decided to not use any of his weapons.
"Use what you will, I care not." He answered, tensing him leg muscles so he could leap out of the way of most attacks.
Xavier decided he would just use his hands and feet. He tossed his sword and knives to the side where his cloak lay. After watching Maureth, he knew that he wouldn't be able to match him blow for blow. Careful planing and precise hits was the only thing that would work. He planned to hit various 'sealing' points. Once he had hit them all, the man's body would shut itself down.
The fog had become pretty thick now, the two could still see each other though. It was time to make the first move.(ok so I know that you can still feel him, but xavier doesnt know that yet) Xavier walked farther back until he could no longer see the man.
(lol, fair enough. And the sealing thing will work at first, but with his power he can manipulate his aura so that he can move his limbs with nothing but his will and mind, just not as fast or strong as he could before) Maureth kept breathing steady breaths, waiting for the right time to strike. The man had backed away further, which is silly in hand to hand combat. So Maureth decided to make it long range. With a mighty stomp, he cracked the earth and sent a channel of energy through the ground. It went straight for the man's pile of stuff, and knocked his sword into the air. Maureth stomped again, and another stream of energy hit the sword as it was falling, sending it straight for the man slower than he would have liked.
Xavier felt an object travel through the fog. It became visible and he noticed it to be his sword. He caught it by the blade and threw it down into the ground. It stuck straight up in the earth.
Obviously sight was not an issue for the man he was fighting. He could feel him just as Xavier could feel the displacement of his fog and feel the man. But he had an easy solution for that, feelings were easy to trick.
Xavier smiled thinking of his next plan. He ran towards the direction of Maureth but past him to the mans left. And again behind him, and seemingly at the same time infront of him.
