Rheo had wandered to the farmlands in search of something to do that didn't involve fighting or healing battle wounds. The riot had taken a lot out of him, and his inner Rau supply hadn't fully replenished itself yet. He loved helping though, and where better to go than the farmlands where every ounce of energy is needed to keep people from starving. He smiled as he passed people, waving at those who waved to him.
Then a little boy came running up to a nearby woman, tears streaming down his face. In a jarbled voice, he managed to tell the woman that 'daddy' had gotten hurt real bad by his axe. The woman covered her mouth and went sprinting off with the little boy. Rheo sighed and followed suit. After about forty seconds of a full out sprint, he got to the morbid scene. The man was laying on the ground, a huge gash in the calf of his leg. Blood soaked the ground, and he looked close to death. The woman was crying along with the little boy.
Rheo didn't take time to ask questions. He ran up to the man and knelt next to him. "You," he said, pointing at the woman, "get something soft to put under his head!" The woman was startled, but did as she was told and ran into the nearby house. Rheo tore a long strip of his own shirt off and grabbed a stick. He tied the cloth onto the sturdy stick in a loop, the gently lifted the man's leg and slipped it into the loop until the loop was above the cut. Rheo immediately began to tighten it by twisting it until it cut off circulation to the wound. His hands were covered in blood by now, and the boy was whimpering to himself. The woman came back and lifted the man's head up to put a pillow under it.
"John... John... Don't leave us..." She cried into his shoulder. Rheo swore to himself and summoned some Rau. He put the little ball that was attached to his palm onto the wound, and immediately the blood impurified it. It made its way into the wound, paralyzing the leg, and started working on repairing it from the inside out. Within thirty seconds, the Rau had disappeared and the man's leg was as good as new. Rheo let the stick loose, and the circulation came back to it. He sighed, wiping the blood onto his pants. Yet another set of clothes ruined...
"I'm going to carry him inside. Keep a warm rag on his head and when he regains consciousness, feed him broth until he can move without getting woozy. Then feed him little chunks of food until he's normal." Rheo said as he picked the man up and carried him into the house. There was a single bed, too small for a man. That's when he realized it was for the child... These two slept on the floor. Rheo swore and gingerly laid the man down on the bed. He broke the headboard off and did a little carpentry with some planks of lumber directly outside the house, extending the length of the bed. He put another blanket on it and a pillow, holding it together with chunks of Rau he had impurified. The man was breathing steadily now, thankfully. Rheo took off his shirt and went outside, then continued to chop the huge pile of wood that the man hadn't finished yet.
He felt a tug on his pants a few minutes later. He looked down, and saw the boy holding a cup of water out to him. Rheo smiled and took ahold of it, then drained it and handed it back to the boy. "Thank you. " He said. The boy smiled and ran back inside. The woman came out directly afterwards.
"How could we ever rep-" she started. Rheo cut her off.
"No payment neccesary. I just did what was right." He said, returning to chopping the wood. "I will stay here for a bit and help out if you want." He said. The woman burst into tears and hugged Rheo, who was taken aback by this show of affection.
"They're my brothers... I'm the oldest, our parents died in the war... You have no clue how much this means..." She said. "I'll do anything to repay you... Anything..." She said. Rheo got the meaning behind her words and pushed her off.
"No. It's perfectly fine, I would've done the same for anybody. Please, just go tend to your brother. That will be payment enough." He said. The woman wiped her tears away and ran inside. Rheo sighed, continuing his work with the lumber. "Just another day in paradise..." He whispered.
