"Not that far, really. You just follow the paths to the beach line, and you'll see the city. It's at the highest point of Avaleur's territory, besides the mountains. In reality, we're just standing in front of it. Avaleur city faces the lake, and ocean, right up there-" the elemental pointed to the wall of dirt in the near distance. "The castle's the closest part to here."
Myra looked at where Jordan pointed. These humans had such peculiar ways to build things, but as long as they were happy it didn't matter. "Really? Next to a lake that leads into the ocean? Terrible place to put a city. Maybe this is just the strategist in me, but should an enemy army make a fleet of ships then that's half the city surrounded, then there's a dense forest on the other side. Terrible place to retreat and an excellent place to hide an army from possible arrows from the defenders. The height advantage doesn't work well either, as half of the city is surrounded by water... I'll have to speak to the king about some possible improvements to the cities infrastructure and defenses."

"Actually there's a number of things why this design is so good, really," Jordan laughed. He thought her way when he found out about this as well. "You see, if they tried to climb up the wall of dirt as soon as they reached the top they would be hit with a large wall of magic, anything that touches the magic is repelled backwards. Not to mention the forest is not the place you want to hide. Any enemies never in the forest before would have a hard time keeping alive. The people of Avaleur, however, are mostly acquainted with the forest. And any beings who live in the forest would surely help. And only the very front of the city faces the waters. The northern part holds the mountains, the east is the waters, the south has the marsh and meadow, lastly in the west there is the forest."
"They have lots of evacuation plans as well, I've heard. The caves in Avaleur lead to so many places. And Avaleur has been attacked before, and we really can hold our ground," Jordan pondered the thought. Even when they were not ready, they've won. At least since Avaleur accepted to have a leader.

"All those are true, but most are human factors. Any good army will have a decent mage capable of either dispelling the repulsive magic or at least cast a propelling magic on the advance soldiers to negate that spell. The same goes for a forest. Should it prove too troublesome, they'd either cut it down or burn it down. I've seen it happen when I came across a village under siege by brigands a few years ago. If they choose to cut down the forest, they can make wooden platforms to stay safe from the marshlands and the danger the pose. All they'd have to do is stay out of range of the city walls. After the platforms are built, any decent general would burn the forest to the ground. And the mountains are far enough away they don't pose any strategic advantage or disadvantage. A landslide or a mudslide would overwhelm that part of the city, however."
Myra, by this point, had given herself a headache from all the analysis. "Ouch... Now my head hurts." She grumbled. Then she shook it off and drew a knife from her belt and sat next to the deer. She plunged the knife in its gut, starting near the bottom, and cut all the way up to its chest. Reaching in, she gutted the deer right there.
"Do you have a bag for the heart and pelt? Or do you save the pelt for when you get to your shop?"
